Namibia’s Health Ministry on Thursday said it had warned patients to avoid taking the “sildenafil citrate” as it can cause heart attacks and stroke.
Health Minister Kamlo Lokeren told The Daily Mail on Tuesday that the ministry had issued an advisory to doctors and other patients about Viagra and the dangers of using it, in connection with people taking nitrates.
The health ministry had earlier advised doctors to refrain from prescribing the drug as it can cause heart attacks and strokes.
The ministry had said that patients would not take nitrates or “poppers”, the active ingredient in Viagra, as it can lead to an increased risk of serious cardiovascular risks, especially heart attacks.
But the health ministry said it did not recommend patients take any other medicines to treat the problem.
The ministry also warned patients not to take nitrates, as they can cause a serious heart problem, and to seek advice from doctors before using the drug.
Dr Glynis Chiawanis, a cardiac surgeon and cardiologist, told the newspaper that his patients should not take Viagra or similar drugs.
“Nitrates can cause heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, which are serious and require careful consideration. The only way to avoid these is to take Viagra or nitrates,” he said.
The ministry had told patients to avoid taking nitrates as the medication can cause a serious cardiovascular problem, such as heart attack and stroke, and to seek advice from doctors before taking the drug.
Dr Chiawanis said he had not seen any reports of heart attack or stroke in patients taking Viagra.
“We have observed a very rapid increase in the incidence of cardiovascular events in the past year and we are confident that it will increase,” he said.
“I do not think it is wise to prescribe Viagra, as it can cause a serious problem. The use of Viagra can cause heart attack and stroke in some patients and can even lead to death in some.”
The health ministry’s action comes as the World Health Organisation, which has to monitor and report the increased risk of heart problems in countries like China, announced it would pull Viagra in the last few months.
But the ministry said it was not aware of any deaths associated with the drug.
In a statement, the ministry said it had reviewed more than 2,500 cases of the serious side effects of Viagra, including erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension.
“We are concerned that Viagra, which is prescribed for erectile dysfunction, may also increase the risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, especially in men over 40,” it said.
Viagra is not recommended for use in children under age 18 years. It is not approved for use in women.
Dr Chiawanis said his patients were not warned of the risk of strokes and heart attacks by the drugs, and that they should seek advice from doctors.
“Our patients are at increased risk, and their cardiovascular risks are higher,” he said.
The ministry also urged people to take the drug only when advised by a doctor, who is a specialist on the drug or other health care professional.
“People should not take Viagra or similar drugs as they are advised to, as it can cause heart problems,” it said.
“Viagra should not be used recreationally. It is not recommended for use in children and is therefore not recommended for women or young people.
“In some countries where Viagra is available on prescription, the use of Viagra should not be considered an offence,” it said.
The ministry advised doctors not to prescribe the drug, but in some cases, it could be taken with or without food.
The health ministry said it had asked doctors to prescribe Viagra only when advised by a doctor.“The use of Viagra should not be considered an offence and should only be done under medical supervision,” it said.
It warned patients to seek advice from a doctor before taking any of the drugs.
“This is a prescription drug, and its effects are not known,” it said.
The ministry said it did not recommend using the drug in patients with known health problems, as it can lead to a serious health problem. The ministry’s advice to doctors and patients was not endorsed by the ministry, but was included in official health guidance.
